Summer Art Camp Registration

Each class contains 25-30 spots reserved on first come first serve basis. Spots will only be saved after payment is received.

June 25 – 28: Painting & Drawing

Instructor: Mary Sugiyama, WPCA Art Educator

Students will explore the basics of painting and drawing mediums through the eyes of inspirational artists and cultures. Mediums will include pencil, oil pastels, watercolor, and tempera. Lessons will focus on paint brush control, beautiful color blending, color mixing and textures.

July 2 – 5: Art Exploration

Instructors: Theresa Kapke & Kate Bradley, WPCA Art Educators

Join us for a short, but exciting week out-and-about in Milwaukee as we charter a bus to visit places where art is created, displayed, and sold. We will explore the newly re-opened Museum of Wisconsin Art as well as work with artist’s in their studios for a “behind the scenes” look at professional artists’ process and work space.

No class on July 4th.

July 9 – 12: Photography

Instructor: Jenny Plevin, Professional Art Educator

Let your children explore the city of Milwaukee through their own viewfinder! Students will receive a digital camera for the week in order to learn the basics of photography, including lighting, view contrast, subject and composition.  They will also have the opportunity to participate in group critiques with other students.  Artwork will be displayed in our gallery during our Youth Art Exhibition.  Students will receive a flash drive with digital copies of their work.  Due to high demand for this class, this week must be paid in full with no refunds in order to hold your child’s spot. Openings are given on a first-come, first-served basis.

July 16 – 19: Fabric & Fiber Arts

Instructors: Mary Sugiyama and Theresa Kapke, WPCA Art Educators

During this week we will explore the world of Fibers! Learn about fabric, wool, and yarn. From dying and sewing, to felting and weaving! Projects will include batik fabric dying techniques, sewing your own shoulder pouch, needle felting small animal friends, and the creation of a collaborative weaving piece to be displayed during our Youth Art Exhibition.

July 23 – 26: Ceramics & Sculpture

Instructors: Mary Sugiyama & Theresa Kapke, WPCA Art Educators

Students will explore basic clay building processes such as pinching, coiling, and slab. Each participant will create their own ceramic pieces complete with colorful glazing layers that will be fired on-site at WPCA. The work will be displayed during our Youth Art Exhibition.

July 30 – August 2: Art Spaces & Places

Instructors: Kate Bradley, Theresa Kapke, & Mary Sugiyama, WPCA Art Educators

Experience the contemporary movement of “Installation Art.” From concept to creation, students work together with Artist Instructors to transform the gallery through collaboration that encourages viewers to experience art in a new way! Participants gain inspiration from contemporary artists as: Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Ann Hamilton and Anish Kapoor. Join us during the opening reception of our Youth Art Exhibition to celebrate their accomplishments: August 9th at 5:30pm!

August 5 – 9: Drum & Dance

Instructor: Souljah Bradley, Professional Artist Educator

Learn cultural dances from some of Milwaukee’s top performers!  Students experience African and Latin traditions as they rehearse choreographed dance pieces and drumming rhythms.  Students will present what they learned during WPCA’s annual ¡Fiesta! Please plan on attending the performance the evening of August 9th.

August 9: Youth Art Exhibition Opening Reception & ¡Fiesta! Performance

5:30pm – 8pm, Performance at 6pm View WPCA’s gallery, transformed by student artwork created over the eight weeks of Summer Art Camp! Join us for a celebration of our local youth’s artistic talents and hard work. Students who attended drum and dance week will perform their routines (so parents of children who attended August 5th – 9th classes, please be prepared to attend this event). The exhibition of student artwork will run through August 24th.  Artwork may not be removed from the gallery during the duration of the exhibition.

August 24: Youth Art Exhibition Closes

August 30th: Student Artwork Pickup (Time TBD)
