Tapetes de Muertos
Saw dust, flowers, color pigment
Like altares, the adornment of tombs and pantheons, the creation of tapetes are manifestations rooted in Oaxaca. Here we bring an important spiritual celebration that honors the ancestral rite of transit between the underworld and our world. This tradition is prepared with great love, care and dedication. Through aserrín (saw dust), we brought to life three designs that honor the past, present and future of this celebration of life. This communal art practice was possible with the support of volunteers from Raices Revolucionarias, Rufus King High School’s Latinos Unidos, High School of the Arts, Hayes Bilingual, and MIAD whom shared many hours of dedication and reverence to this practice.
Las Vidas Negras Importan
Across from the Present times tapete, this altar honors the lives of those brothers and sisters whose lives were taken through state-sanctioned police brutality. Black life must be valued. We demand racial justice and affirm that our struggles for liberation are connected.
Flowers, moss, foliage, soil

Aquí Descansamos is a living cemetery composed of floral sculptures in place of gravestones. Mirroring the shape of common grave-markers, Aquí Descansamos presents an alternate form of memorial, contrasting the somber, grey-stone visuals of traditional cemeteries with color, growth, decomposition, and renewal. This living cemetery offers a space to celebrate life’s vibrancy and beauty while acknowledging its temporary and ever-changing nature.
No matter how we choose to honor the dead, we will all face loss one day and find ourselves seeking comfort in ritual and memorialization. In reminding us of our universal experience of grief as human beings, Aquí Descansamos honors the dead while providing space to imagine a future where we rest alongside them. How we choose to memorialize our loved ones, and wish to be memorialized ourselves, is entirely up to us.
