October 29th – November 16th, 2021
October 29th, 6pm-8pm
The purépechas considered monarch butterflies to be the souls of the dead, returning to visit us in this realm. Here, we commemorate the lives of the dearly departed and welcome the return of their spirits as we celebrate their eternal memories. This 29th Annual exhibition will feature altares from community groups and contemporary expressions of this long standing cultural practice.
Community Altares: Every year, WPCA invites community groups to build altares for Dia de los Muertos. We provide a space in our gallery, and support from WPCA staff through the design and installation process. Our Art Educators welcome opportunities to further explore Dia de Los Muertos via a workshop, guest lecture, or field-trip with participating groups. This is an opportunity to highlight an issue important to each group and share it with our community.
