23nd Annual Dia de los Muertos Exhibition

October 16 – November 21, 2015

Opening Reception: Fall Gallery Night, Friday, October 16, 5–9 pm.

Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a celebration honoring loved ones who have passed and a time to reflect on those who are still with us. Colorful ofrendas (offerings/altars) commemorate the dead and welcome their returning souls during the holiday. The exhibition not only presents a cultural and art experience, but also offers stories of those who, even in their absence, prove to be impactful and continue to inspire.

Ofrendas are festively decorated with traditional motifs like the marigold flower, sugar skull, papel picado, monarch butterfly, as well as food, beverages and personal items reflecting the life of the person commemorated.

This year we invited Casa RomeroLULAC Latinas Council #330 and Antiqua Latin Restaurant to create ofrendas dedicated to their loved ones.

Other artists and community members exhibiting artwork and ofrendas include Jeanette ArellanoJamie Bilgo BruchmanDiego HerediaXela GarciaJanice MahlbergGary Warren NiebuhrLeann WootenMary SmithLona Long VelascoKika Marez and Maria Herrera. WPCA’s Hands-on After School Art Class students, led by Arts Education Coordinator Maikue Vang, will exhibit an ofrenda in honor of artist and philanthropist Mary Nohl.

Art historian Juan J. Lopez curates this year’s exhibition with the theme of ‘food’. The opening reception will include Mexican food and beverage fare from local restaurants, Mexican folk dance by Instituto Cultural de Danza de Manuel Goana and a presentation by the curator.
