2016-17 Featured Member Exhibition

We are thrilled to have artist Amy Schmutte opening up the 2016-17 Featured Member Exhibition series with her fine art photography. Amy creates abstract narratives composed and orchestrated with glass and light, and captures photographic imagery with non-digital photography processes. She uses multiple exposures to create intricate textures and depth, and often add hand-drawn elements to give accent to an image.
Artist Statement
My photography is a visual escape, with no heavy messages…a playground for the mind. It’s an expression of my love for the incredible qualities of translucence, texture, shape, color, and depth. Each piece is a purist macro-abstraction, created using glass objects as an additional “lens”. There is an intentional avoidance of digital manipulation, for the sake of pushing the traditional methods of photographic abstraction… to the limit! The titles are derived from a brainstorm of feelings and objects that the image brings to mind, giving each piece an individual personality, a life of it’s own.
2016–17 Featured Member Exhibition juror
Each year, a juror selects four outstanding artists from the Annual Members Show to exhibit individually in their own Featured Member Exhibition. Each exhibition opens on Gallery Night and runs for about 10 weeks.
We are honored to have artist, educator, gallerist Mark Lawson as the juror of this year’s Featured Member Exhibition (FME) artists. Mark has been a champion of Milwaukee’s art community for decades. He is an instructor and Director of Galleries at Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. He is also one of the founders and organizers of Riverwest Artist Association and Jazz Gallery, which for decades has been an important incubator of visual, performance art as well as jazz and experimental music.
