The Scratch Sessions South
June 22 – July 20
No registration necessary
(Drop-ins welcome. Stay as long as you like!)
Free and open to everyone ages 13–18
DJing is an art expression. Music and sound are your paint. Turntables and switches are brushes. You listen, layer, build up and breakdown. You orchestrate. It’s collaborative and builds community.
We are honored to host The Scratch Sessions South — DJing lessons instructed by DJ Bizzon and DJ Loop. Each Thursday, 4–7 pm, from June 22 to July 20, Bizzon and Loop will be on deck to teach the expansive art of DJing.
We will learn fundamentals of DJing, basic to advanced techniques, the history of turntablism, and the rise of the digital age. We will also get hands-on with music selection, scratching, beat matching and more! Equipment will be provided by the instructors, and will include vinyl turntables and controllers, as well as digital software like Serato DJ and Traktor. If you have equipment, please feel free to bring it if convenient.
This series of The Scratch Sessions South at WPCA is a spinoff of the original Scratch Sessions started and run by DJ Bizzon, every Monday (4–8 pm) at The Jazz Gallery Center for the Arts in Riverwest.
All teens (13–18 y/o) and level of experience are welcome! We do want to especially encourage GIRLS to participate, as there’s a great need of more young, female (particularly Latina) DJs and mentors. DJ Loop, who grew up in the Latino community on the Southside of Milwaukee, has become a role model to other youth Latina and girls of color who aspires to be a professional DJ.
About the Instructors
Nelly Vigil (AKA DJ Loop) is a Milwaukee-based DJ known for her eclectic music selection, technical skill and connecting with a crowd. Loop DJs clubs as well as private and corporate events at venues like Bad Genie, the Bradley Center (Milwaukee Bucks), Newaukee Night Market, Cactus Club, Gibraltar and more. As the official DJ of FROM HERE TO HER Artist Collective, an alliance of women community artists, her goal is to inspire other female DJs like she’s been inspired by those whose footsteps she followed in and to help pave a wider path for women in the music industry.
Tyrone Miller (AKA DJ Bizzon) is one of the Midwest’s most sought-after DJs. Tyrone co-hosts Those Hip Hop Guys Radio on 91.7 FM WMSE and is a member of Vocalo Radio’s DJ collective in Chicago. He created and writes for JSOnline’s Those Hip Hop Guys Blog, the only column in a major Wisconsin publication focused on hip-hop culture. He’s also an activist, mentor, youth worker and nationally recognized teaching artist who uses music to empower young people and create change in the community. He’s the founder of The Scratch Sessions.
