Caring for Each Other / Cuidandonos

Walker’s Point Center for the Arts has the longest standing tradition of celebrating this cultural practice in Milwaukee. This is a year of “Caring for Each Other/Cuidandonos” as we commemorate 31 years of centering and uplifting this tradition in our neighborhood and beyond. We celebrate the lives of the dearly departed, their impact and memories through contemporary expressions from artists, and altares from community partners/members. Join us for an evening with dance, pan de muerto and champurrado. Dance performance by Grupo Folclorico de Hayes Bilingual will take place at 6:30pm.

Statement: Las alas de la mariposa representan la unión en nuestra comunidad. Nuestras diferencias nos unen y las relaciones que se forman son genuinas. El amor y el cariño entre nosotros es único. Statement: “Quien con la esperanza vive, alegre muere.” A beautiful saying that has been passed on for generations, a quick reminder that although life isn’t forever, our legacy can be eternal. “He who lives with hope dies happy.” Lenguajes de Amor was built with the idea that everything that makes up a person is their legacy, accomplishments and especially the different ways they show their love. Each of the layers represents a different aspect of our journey, family, food, traditions and our community. Gracias a todas las personas que nos apoyan todos los días.

Statement: La Causa Charter School wanted to honor the remarkable achievements of Latinxs who challenged structures of power that kept our communities underserved and underrepresented. Through their courage and talent, they gave the next generations a sense of belonging and a realization of their own power. This ofrenda was the perfect vehicle to connect our students with their history by dancing to Celia’s songs, singing cumbias with Selena, connecting to Frida’s passions and pains, applauding Roberto’s talent and generosity with the world, admiring Cesar’s fight for just working conditions, and laughing with Chespirito’s cleverness. We will continue celebrating our history through culturally responsive pedagogy and a commitment to bilingual education.
La Causa Charter School quería honrar los logros de notables Latinxs que retaron estructuras de poder, las cuales mantenían a nuestra comunidad oprimida y marginalizada. A través de su coraje y talento, ellos dieron a las próximas generaciones un sentido de pertenencia y el reconocimiento de su propio poder. Esta ofrenda fue el vehículo perfecto para conectar a nuestros estudiantes con su historia al bailar las canciones de Celia, cantar las cumbias de Selena, conectar con las pasiones y penas de Frida, aplaudir el talento y generosidad de Roberto, admirar la luchas de César por mejores condiciones laborales y reír con la genialidad de Chespirito. Nosotros continuaremos celebrando nuestra historia por medio de prácticas pedagógicas culturalmente responsables y con el compromiso por la educación bilingüe.

Statement: Our youth took the time to begin having conversations about Day of the Dead. Most youth have trouble speaking about death and how it can affect them. In our class, we focused on the positive aspects and found ways to celebrate life. We are beginning to take the first steps as a class to understand the beauty in the cycle of life. // Nuestros jóvenes se tomaron el tiempo para comenzar a tener conversaciones sobre el Día de Muertos. La mayoría de los jóvenes tienen problemas para hablar sobre la muerte y cómo ésta puede afectarlos. En nuestra clase, nos enfocamos en los aspectos positivos y encontramos maneras de celebrar la vida. Estamos empezando a dar los primeros pasos como clase para comprender la belleza en el ciclo de la vida.

Statement: En el resplandor radiante de la unidad, los estudiantes de la Escuela Bilingüe Hayes, desde jardín de infantes hasta séptimo grado, se unen para crear un tapiz luminoso de recuerdo. En este espacio sagrado, rendimos homenaje a nuestros queridos seres queridos, familiares y comunidad. que se han embarcado en su viaje más allá. Nuestro tema, ‘Cuidarnos unos a otros, a aquellos que ya no están aquí’, subraya la esencia del Día de Muertos, donde el amor trasciende los límites de la vida y la muerte. El título ‘Iluminando el camino de la memoria’ guía nuestra intención, iluminando el camino para nuestros sentidos homenajes.Como artistas jóvenes, tejemos historias, recuerdos y ofrendas en este altar colectivo. Cada elemento representa el espíritu perdurable de aquellos que han tocado nuestras vidas. In the radiant glow of unity, the students of Hayes Bilingual School, from kindergarten to seventh grade, come together to create a luminous tapestry of remembrance. In this sacred space, we pay homage to our cherished loved ones, family members, and community who have embarked on their journey beyond. Our theme, ‘Caring for Each Other, for Those Who Are No Longer Here,’ underscores the essence of Day of the Dead, where love transcends the boundary of life and death. The title ‘Illuminating the Path of Memory’ guides our intent, illuminating the way for our heartfelt tributes. As young artists, we weave stories, memories, and offerings into this collective altar. Each element represents the enduring spirit of those who have touched our lives. From vibrant marigolds to the aroma of favorite foods, and the flickering of candles, we celebrate the essence of our beloved ones. In this creation, we honor the diversity of our community, recognizing that memory knows no borders. We invite you to join us on this sacred journey, where the path of memory is brilliantly illuminated. Together, we find solace in knowing that our loved ones live on in our hearts and in the community that surrounds us.

Raíces Revolucionarias

Statement: Este altar se erige como un poderoso testimonio del espíritu indomable del pueblo palestino y un crudo recordatorio de las vidas injustamente arrebatadas. Presentamos nuestros respetos con los colores inquebrantables del rojo, el verde, el blanco y el negro, que simbolizan la resiliencia frente a la opresión. La bandera palestina, una vez prohibida, se convirtió en un faro de resistencia, al igual que los artistas que ingeniosamente incorporaron estos colores en su trabajo, como el icónico arte de la sandía.
This altar stands as a powerful testament to the indomitable spirit of the Palestinian people and a stark reminder of the lives unjustly taken. We pay our respects with the unwavering colors of red, green, white, and black, symbolizing resilience in the face of oppression. The Palestinian flag, once banned, became a beacon of resistance, just like artists who ingeniously incorporated these colors into their work, such as the iconic watermelon art. In this altar, we embody the spirit of this resistance. Here, we not only commemorate the departed but also dedicate ourselves to action. This is an integral part of our commitment to political resistance and our unwavering support for those affected by the ongoing tragedy in Palestine. We honor the traditional Day of the Dead altars while ensuring that our tribute carries the radical spirit of change, justice, and solidarity. En este altar, encarnamos el espíritu de esta resistencia. Aquí, no solo conmemoramos a los difuntos, sino que también nos dedicamos a la acción. UMOS RAICES | Contributors: Raices Youth
Statement: El grupo juvenil UMOS RAICES creó una ofrenda en honor a los niños/jóvenes que perdieron la vida debido a la violencia armada en los Estados Unidos a lo largo de 2023 hasta ahora, para transmitir el profundo impacto de la violencia armada en nuestras comunidades. Esta ofrenda es un espacio sagrado, un santuario de recuerdo y un homenaje a las almas jóvenes cuyas vidas fueron trágicamente truncadas. Los elementos de este altar fueron cuidadosamente elegidos para simbolizar las vidas perdidas y las historias que no se contaron, rindiendo homenaje a los sueños potenciales y futuros que se fueron demasiado pronto. The UMOS RAICES youth group created an ofrenda honoring the children/youth who lost their lives due to gun violence in the United States throughout 2023 thus far, to convey the profound impact of gun violence in our communities. This ofrenda is a sacred space, sanctuary of remembrance, and a tribute to the young souls whose lives were tragically cut short. The elements of this altar were carefully chosen to symbolize the lives lost and the stories left untold, paying homage to the potential dreams, and futures that were gone too soon. It is a physical manifestation of our collective sorrow, resilience, and hope.Throughout this artistic expression, we seek to commemorate the vibrant spirits of these children and youth while raising awareness about the urgent need for change. We invite viewers to reflect, remember, and join the call toward action for a safer world for the next generation.
