Change Will Change

I am a storyteller of collected observation and thought. My creative process often follows a system of rules that I set for myself at the beginning of a new project. In this most recent body of work, ‘Change Will Change’, I created abstract landscapes made up of Perler Beads. The rule was to omit two or three bead color options at a time before making each piece. From there, the process was an intuitive flow.

The abstract landscapes are influenced by my previous bodies of work, ‘Goodnight Bruce’ and ‘Bruce Meets Adam’. The two multimedia series share my experience of being displaced from Walker’s Point in 2021. Halfway through making ‘Change Will Change’ I introduced a burst of two new colors and shuffled the Perler beads on the plastic plate that is used to hold the beads in place before they are ironed together–as a child, the sight of Perler beads knocked around on their plate was a summer school nightmare.

However, each composition then became a recollection of generalized stages of grief and past growth that I was processing all over again. Titles for each ‘landscape’ started to ideate as I continued to ask myself: what is the cost of change and who is to pay for it?
