Minding The Gap

Minding the Gap considers what it means to inhabit a space I call the gap—the distance between desire and fulfillment, the life I imagine and the life I occupy, knowing where I want to be while recognizing that I am not there yet. There is a roughness to living inside that awareness. It is a place where questions of intimacy, motherhood, ambition, Blackness, and self-perception intersect. Constructed from rope and thousands of zip ties, these vessels have become evolving metaphors for the self, built slowly through repetition and tension. Though they resemble containers, they are incapable of fulfilling the traditional purpose of a vessel. Instead, they express the ongoing process of becoming. I return to the vessel because it allows me to mark time. The form remains familiar, but each iteration reflects a different version of myself. Their forms sag and strain toward stability, echoing the imperfect process of moving through the gap and returning to its lessons again and again. As a Black American and as a mother, I understand becoming as both deeply personal and profoundly shaped by forces beyond my individual ambition. My understanding of the future is informed by inherited expectations, care, resilience, visibility, and the continual work of imagining a life beyond what has been prescribed. These vessels mind the gap. They acknowledge the shared condition of existing between who we are and who we hope to become, inviting viewers to contemplate moments in their own lives when they, too, have occupied that uncertain space.
Each year during WPCA’s Annual Members Show, an esteemed juror selects four exhibiting artists whose work stands out for its excellence and impact. For 2026, juror Amal Azzam conducted a blind review of submissions, applying her own criteria to identify artists whose work resonated deeply with contemporary themes and artistic innovation.
Among the selected artists is Geornica Daniels, whose sculptures displayed extraordinary experimentation and creativity. Azzam noted that Daniel’s “Raw, sucker emotions invite viewers to engage deeply with the work, which explores femininity through its form, materials, and presentation.”
The 2026 Featured Member Exhibition Series will be comprised of four solo shows for Cynthia Hayes in the winter, followed by exhibitions from Susan Simensky Bietila (spring), Geornica Daniels (summer), and Kristine Hinrichs (fall).
