WPCA is launching ROOTS: Art Residency for Young Creatives (15–18 yrs)

New deadline: October 4th @ 11:59pm

This 8-week residency invites Milwaukee teens to explore storytelling, memory, and creative authorship through multimedia art. Participants will engage in photography, interviews, and digital story mapping to document street memorials—those powerful, often-overlooked markers of grief, love, and legacy found across our neighborhoods.

At the heart of the residency is En Memoria / In Memoriam, a youth-led collective project that honors lives lost and the communities that remember them. Teens will identify memorial sites, shape narratives, and co-create a living archive that reflects public mourning and neighborhood resilience.

In addition to this collaborative work, each youth artist will develop individual projects that explore personal stories, creative techniques, and chosen mediums—from photography and video to writing, collage, and digital design. These projects will help participants learn how to create, talk about, and share their art with confidence and intention.

Participants will receive:

  • 28 hours of studio time
  • 14 hours of instruction and experiential projects
  • Mentorship from community artists
  • Stipends for participation
  • Multimedia training in photography, interviews, and digital mapping
  • A public exhibition to share both collective and individual work
